JLPT N4 kanji list: the 204 kanji after N5

· 26 min read · Readings checked against JMdict and KANJIDIC2

N4 is the second level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), and its kanji take you from the basics to everyday life: work and school, travel, food, family, the seasons and the verbs you use every day. Below are all 204 kanji in Chirami’s JLPT N4 list, from the most common to the least, each with its meaning, its onyomi and kunyomi readings, and a common word that uses it. Together with the 80 N5 kanji, that makes 284.

About this list

The JLPT describes N4 as “the ability to understand basic Japanese”, including reading “passages on familiar daily topics written in basic vocabulary and kanji”. It hasn’t published official kanji lists since its 2010 revision, so every N4 list, ours included, is an unofficial guide. Chirami’s list follows the lists most learners and textbooks use.

The kanji are in order of how often they appear in Japanese newspapers, using the frequency ranking in KANJIDIC2, which is based on four years of the Mainichi Shimbun. Newspapers favour some words over others, so kanji like 会 (meeting) and 社 (company) come first, while everyday kanji like 春 (spring) and 姉 (older sister) come near the end.

In the tables, onyomi are the readings that came from Chinese, in katakana, and kunyomi are native Japanese readings, in hiragana, with the kana that follow the kanji in brackets. Onyomi vs kunyomi explains the difference. Lesson under a kanji means we have a short lesson on it.

How to learn the N4 kanji

Learn the N5 kanji first. Many N4 kanji are built from them: 林 and 森 are two and three trees (木), 明 is written with 日 (sun) and 月 (moon), and 好 with 女 (woman) and 子 (child). When you know the parts, a new kanji is a new arrangement of old pieces. Kanji radicals shows how the parts work.

Some N4 kanji are easiest in sets. The four seasons are one:

123456789
春springtime · 9 strokes
12345678910
夏summer · 10 strokes
123456789
秋autumn · 9 strokes
12345
冬winter · 5 strokes

Others are the colours 赤 (red), 青 (blue) and 黒 (black), with 色 (colour) itself, and the family words 兄 (older brother), 弟 (younger brother), 姉 (older sister) and 妹 (younger sister).

At 5 new kanji a day, the 204 N4 kanji take 41 days. At 3 a day they take 68 days, and at 8 a day, 26. As with N5, learn each kanji through one real word, and keep a few minutes a day for reviews. The guide to learning kanji explains the method.

The 50 most common N4 kanji

These are the building blocks of everyday compound words: 会社 (kaisha, company), 自分 (jibun, oneself) and 新聞 (shinbun, newspaper), which pairs N4’s 新 (new) with N5’s 聞 (hear).

Common questions

How many kanji are on the JLPT N4?

There is no official number, because the JLPT stopped publishing kanji lists in 2010. Chirami’s N4 list has 204 kanji, which makes 284 together with N5. Other lists differ by a few kanji either way.

Should I learn the N5 kanji first?

Yes. Many N4 kanji are made of N5 kanji, and the common words in this list often pair an N4 kanji with an N5 one, like 新聞 (shinbun, newspaper) or 自分 (jibun, oneself).

Why isn’t this list in alphabetical or textbook order?

Kanji have no alphabetical order, and textbooks each use their own. Frequency order puts the kanji you’ll meet most often first, which is a sensible order when you’re learning on your own. If your class follows a textbook, follow its order instead.

How long does it take to learn the N4 kanji?

At 5 new kanji a day, about six weeks, plus a few minutes of review each day. At that pace, N5 and N4 together take about two months.
